11.1 Assignment 1: Organization Assessment according to the Eleven Tao Factors
(Go to the bottom for the link to assignment submission)
Objective:
This assignment will draw on Ajit Rao’s research (book). You are to assess your organization according to the Eleven Tao Factors (drivers) & 87 questions on Appendix C (p. 241-248). For your convenience, you can find the file in the bottom of this page to download.
You may use the following points to outline your paper, which should be 6-8 pages (double spaced). For some sections, as is appropriate, bulleted points or charted data may be used.
Begin by briefly describing your organization as one would do on a website page “About Us”. Describe your organization’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values in a similar fashion as the Sarova Case Study (this week’s PPT slides).
Use Appendix C (pp. 241-248) to create a framework for the assessment of your organization. Use these three main sections and sub-headings.
Part C: Communication
- Devise a way to assess your organization according to these eleven attributes. You may wish to (a) rank them, or (b) use a high to low value on the presence of a particular criterion.
- Identify which of these eleven factors currently contribute the most to your organization’s level of loyalty.
- Identify some current practices that need to change if employee loyalty is to improve.
- Lastly, what two things can you implement immediately to improve employee engagement and thereby organizational performance?

11.2 Assignment 2: Real life reflective paper
Instructions:
Write about a situation (preferably real life) where you have experienced or are experiencing an employee or colleague who is “under-performing”. I suggest the following points to outline your paper, which should be 6-8 pages (double spaced).
- Begin by profiling this individual in terms of their …
- life situation: age and gender, relevant life circumstance (e.g. young family, etc.), and
- work situation: job title.
- Describe the problem. In what ways are they underperforming? Substantiate your case study with details/examples of his/her performance.
- Use Adam Grant’s Ted Talk’s categories (agreeable giver, agreeable taker, disagreeable giver, disagreeable taker) to identify what motivates them. Explain the rationale for the assigned label.
- Use the RESPECT model & Recognition drivers & Crisis Management Framework to identify drivers that you perceive might be lacking if you want to build a culture of employee engagement.
- Sum up the resulting challenges, including an evaluation of how much the situation may impact others in the organization or those on the team.
- Address how you can approach the problem.
- Consider the timing of an intervention.
- As a servant leader and steward of the organization, discuss the situation in terms of potential discipline or termination of employment.
- How do your faith (or foundational core values) and servant leadership principles influence the action you would/will take with this employee?

11.3 Assignment 3: Process and Analysis Tool design
Based on the content studied in this course, design a Process and Analysis Tool for “Employee Engagement and Stewardship” in an organization. You may choose to develop the proposal based on your present organization or for a previous organization you were involved with.
This tool should address three key areas:
- Introduction ~ for new employees of the purpose, goals, and expectations of employee engagement in the organization.
- Analysis Tool ~ to adequately measure and assess the engagement of the employee as well as the effectiveness of the organization’s stewardship of said employee.
- Policy & Practices ~ for addressing any identified concerns and the ongoing development of Employee Engagement for long-term sustainability.
The primary purpose of this assignment is for this to become a “working paper” for you to further develop and utilize within your organization and leadership practices.
Your proposed “Process & Analysis Tool” should take into consideration all the key themes/focuses we have discussed throughout this course and should include the following info in your final assignment:
- Introduction: To the organization being addressed.
- This would be the same information you would give to your new employee. (You may reuse your information from Section 1 of your Assignment #2)
- This would be the same information you would give to your new employee. (You may reuse your information from Section 1 of your Assignment #2)
- Purpose Statement: for the Process and Analysis Tool and the expected benefits and outcomes of its implementation within the organization.
- Methodology and Process for the introduction. Take into consideration the timing as well. For example, when and how during the hiring process and orientation.
- Methodology and Process for attaining the information. (i.e. surveys, interviews, feedback loops, follow-up, etc.)
- Key Themes: List the key focuses to be addressed. (i.e. consider the key focuses in this course)
- Methodology for Analysis: learning from the information (i.e. appointed committee, forms, clearly laid out Employee Engagement policies and check-list, etc.)
- Recommended Responses and Follow-up: to the concerns and shortcomings discovered through the analysis.
- Recommended Policy and Practices for increasing and facilitating ongoing effective engagement and stewardship.
- Conclusion: Why do you feel this Analysis Tool would be beneficial in your organization. How have servant leadership principles influenced your proposal?
Important: Provide support for your approach and reference it accordingly. Where possible, include any supporting materials in the appendix (i.e. copy of the proposed survey, copy of Employee Engagement Policies, check-list, etc.)
Submission format: The paper should be 10-12 pages, not including your references and appendix material.
The overall purpose of this final Assignment is to help you build a tool that can help you to intentionally apply what you have learned in this course towards becoming more effective in your leadership influence within your organization. This may be at a corporate level as you introduce this as a proposed company policy, or on a personal level as you apply it to your approach to employee engagement within your team.
